Michelle Obama & the Racist Trinity Church Video Tape

6/3/08 UPDATE: The “sensational racist” tape propounded by Hillary activist Larry Johnson on his site appears to be what I initially predicted–nothing. (BTW, don’t mistake me for a democrat. I think Hillary would be easier to beat than Obama.) Johnson noted that he had not heard this tape himself. He is in fact, incompetent. Note his lame, follow-up hit piece. To the contrary, Obama’s campaign is well poised. Using a competent strategy of “drawing the sting,” something Bill Clinton forgot to do, Obama’s campaign seems to have immediately responded to the accusations about this tape. The fact that he responded quickly is a brilliant move because it is contrary to one’s intuition. If you know you’re about to be stung, better it is to come from your mouth. If Hillary knew of this and is withholding it on agreement with the McCain clan, then it may actually backfire on her.

The entire issue appears to be a linquistic spin over whether Michelle said in a video, “Why’d he . . .” and “Whitey”. (Click here to read more.) I say it goes nowhere. Plus, Michelle seems to now be strategically hugging “Whitey” so there’s no more problem with her racism.

Forgive me you all, but what do you suppose Michelle is thinking in this picture? Here’s a few suggestions:

“Why’d he not take a bath?”

“Why’d he kick my shins?”

The American Daughter Blog has a published great piece on the existence of a possible tape. I won’t bore you with my writing. Head over to the American Daughter now. You’ll be shocked if it turns out the tape is true and exists. I somehow doubt that this tape is as damning as everyone seems to think. Why? For starters, if it were, one is tempted to conclude that Hillary’s staying in the race is something more than mere psychosis. To boot, such a sharp piece of leverage would also be a reason for McCain to withhold it so as to insure that Obama is the nominee. But this contradiction can’t be reconciled. It has the smell of fantasy.

Hillary must not have known about it or she wouldn’t have let it go this long. She’s a hard worker who is actually conservative in the way she campaigns. (Yes, she gets loose once in a blue moon with sniper comments.) Nevertheless, she’s first and foremost a democrat and this failure to come out with it would surely be negatively remembered for years to come. She’d be blamed for waiting so long. I’m fairly sure she would have leaked it by now herself. So if the tape exists and it is damning, it is most reasonable to conclude McCain has it and Hillary didn’t know it. (This is starting to sound a little conspiratorial in nature. It would be impossible to hold it so long without folks knowing. I therefore conclude that it can’t be really damning at all.)

Let me also state that if it is true that this tape exists but that the Republicans have innocently misunderstood what Michelle Obama said on the tape—if the misunderstanding comes from interpreting the enunciation and pronunciation of a black woman—Republican strategy will backfire profoundly. It is high risk, high gain. McCain’s folks better make sure they have the goods with certainty. And it better not come out the wrong way. The last thing McCain needs is to be accused of making fun of the way African Americans speak.
