My readers know full well that I cannot endorse Sen. John McCain. However, I am concerned that there are those within our own party who show little concern for truth. This brings me to a flurry of many articles lately attempting to impugn John McCain’s tenure as a POW. An interesting BBC article popped up arising out of an interview of one of McCain’s Hanoi Hilton guards by the name of Tran Trong Duyet. Duyet tells us that McCain wasn’t truthful about captivity. He also tells us, “I can confirm to you that we never tortured him. We never tortured any prisoners.” Hmmm….should we trust him? One of McCain’s cell mates and Medal of Honor recipient, Bud Day, recounts how he was tortured. YouTube Bud Day and I think you’ll be surprised. Orson Swindle was another POW cell mate with McCain. He, too, testifies to this torture. You’ll conclude that this fellow Duyet is a bit mistaken.
Then there is McCain’s ”snub” of the Viet Cong soldier, Mai Van On, who allegedly “saved” John McCain’s life. To hear the press report it, Sen. McCain owed this communist, Mr. On, a debt of gratitude. Please reader, wake up. Read Igor Gouzenko’s book, The Fall of a Titan. It’ll impress upon you how the communist mind works. Mr. On didn’t save McCain’s life but was advancing his position within the Communist Party. Nothing more, nothing less.
So what’s left? Some have questioned John McCain’s patriotism by referring to 32 broadcasts where McCain helped the enemy and the cooperation he gave. You can YouTube that stuff yourself as I won’t have time to insert it. The fact is, I don’t question McCain for anything he did as a POW and neither should you. You’d sing like a parakeet if you were a guest at the Hanoi Hilton and wanted to save your bacon or end your pain. McCain’s garment is seamless here. Oh, but wait! What of this “preferential” or “soft” treatment as grounds to impugn McCain? I affectionately refer to this as Bovine Scatology—BS for you publikly ejucated kids. Every man has his breaking point. There are also the folks who claim McCain tried to stymie declassification of sensitive documents. From my take, I think McCain believes the ”bring the POWs home” groups are a cottage industry not deserving of help. If you’re interested in learning more of McCain’s captivity, take a moment and read the detailed .PDF version of Mccain’s Own Account. He wrote it in 1973.
Finally, having supported McCain’s POW record and giving the man credit, let me again reiterate that John McCain’s war service is irrelvant to his quest for the Presidency. He doesn’t follow the rule of law and I think he lost a touch of his moral fiber in prison especially when he divorced his wife soon upon release. Based on his own account of captivity, you’ll see he doesn’t seem to have changed all that much. For John McCain, the fact remains that the means justify the end. It’s what the communists taught him. It is this political thought that has caused us to stray and experience the single largest increase in the size of the federal government since the time of LBJ.
